From humble beginnings as the son of yam farmers from northern Ghana, who was privileged to make it to Ghana’s premier medical school, I took interest very early on in how doctors generally interacted with patients. I observed rather curiously that while some doctors maintained a healthy professional relationship with patients irrespective of the standing of the patients in society, others regrettably seemed to treat patients better if the patients were better educated or occupied a higher status in society. This didn’t sit well with me. I reckoned that medicine being a noble, an honorable, and truly learned profession must have established norms guiding standards of practice and conduct. I also learned from my early clinical years in junior clerkship that the public do not only value doctors who are technically competent but also doctors who acted with integrity, who behaved well and treated their patients with dignity and respect. My curious and inquisitorial mind led me to discover medical ethics and law in fifth year medical school. More...
